Applebees, what is going on with them??
May 2nd, 2017 at 8:39pm

I think they are going insane.

They sent out emails about a buy 1, get 1 free entrée offer that can be used daily before 5 pm.  That was the subject header of the email.

open the email and it states it is only good Monday through Thursday... not daily.

So I wrote them via their website, figuring the email subject was a typo or something... what I got back totally surprised me.... this is their response.

Dear Bruce,

Thank you for your e-mail voicing your concern about our advertising. We respect all points of view and appreciate your feedback. If you have any additional feedback, please contact us either via phone at 888-592-7753 or through our website at www.applebees.com.

Sincerely,

I guess its a different point of view what daily means.

They also have done away with their free b-day meal.  They now say they just give a free dessert instead, which I am still waiting to get, not that I am going there.

Bruce, I feel C.I has larger issues to be discussed. The atrocities taking place at Applebees is going to have to be place on hold.  Grin

One issue could be Applebees is losing money and cutting back on promotions.  The curse of the north side could still exist.

Thank you WhiteSandsKid for this comment. I was going to respond in a similar manner. Now that I think of it, perhaps we are insensitive to how important this issue is to Captain. He may feel the need to fight this just for the principle of it.

Captain, I am truly sorry Applebee's reneged on the food offer they made to you. I understand how disappointed you must be that you cannot use your coupon on weekends. I imagine that their excuse is that offers "are only valid at participating locations" or that weekends are peak times for Coney Island crowds, but that does not negate the unfairness of this situation. I think you should follow up with the contact information they included in their cryptic email response. I am sure customer service can escalate your case to a supervisor who will do right by you.

A far as financial trouble, are you referring to the Applebee's chain or this specific location? Can't really generalise from this but when a friend and I attended the Polar Bear event we left Applebees because the estimated wait was close to an hour. Her seven year old daughter would have stayed, but mom was impatient  Cheesy

Are you unable to tell that this is an automated form response? It's obvious the above wasn't typed out by a real person....

There was some intelligence behind it.  They read it was about a ad they sent.  So they looked at their prepared responses for one talking about ads and sent it to me.  Not just very bright intelligence.

On the other hand of the spectrum, If I sent that to Disney, they would have called me, and read a prepared statement, and would have done something about knowing the difference between daily and weekdays, minus Fridays.

I will go to TGI Fridays.  I don't mind the drive and they have parking.

I can't remember when that north side stretch of Surf between West 12th and West 8th was truly vibrant.  Throughout the 60s and 70s, the only real excitement I can recall there was the B&B Carousel -- which even then was largely overlooked since that stretch of Surf was so desolate and boring.

Then came the flea markets and outlets for stolen goods and the like -- bringing even more sleaze to that stretch of Surf.

Maybe I'm forgetting some of the good stuff along there during the 60s and 70s.  If anyone has a memory of such, please share it.

I have to admit Captain, you impress me more and more with each and every new post. How many people (other than BrooklynAlex) would have detected that the email you received was a stock response, akin to old time "form letters" .  You are so correct Bruce. If Disney made such a glaring error, they would have done right by you ten-fold. Too bad there is no central entity in the 'Coney Island Amusement Park' that  you can register a complaint with like at Disney. I still, however, think you should contact Applebee's directly again and ask to speak to an administrator.

Their loss Captain. A chain that can't differentiate "daily and weekdays, minus Fridays" is a resturaunt I wouldn't patronise either. They probably can't tell the difference between beef and horse meat either. Only joking Cheesy

I don't recall a booming Surf Avenue north side either. Perhaps Captain is referring  to the Lowes theatre and Animal Nursery. I think he once mentioned a small amusement park between West 8th and 12th? Maybe that's why Bruce says "it's all about the land between the Aquarium and Keyspan SOUTH Surf  (and Trump Village and Warbasse too) Cheesy I'm kidding you.

In certain respects W32, I suppose the furniture stores and flea markets were in their own way successful. But they don't count in the context of an amusement zone.

Coney Island baby boomers like me will remember the glorious B&B when it sat in its pavilion there on the north side of Surf Avenue for so many years -- a testament to the enduring nature of the World's Playground, Coney Island.

Rest in peace, Mike Saltzstein.

I always feel for the people who lose their jobs. Applebee’s has apparently not yet announced the locations of closure. Unless it is regional, the decision may be performance or location based. The Surf Avenue May survive due to its location in Coney Island.

Unless there were unforeseen and unpublished circumstances, it would be a reflection of incompetent leadership for a struggling corporation to expand by opening company-owned stores and franchises.

My only experience with this particular Applebee’s was on New Years Day 2017. My friend, her seven-year-old daughter, and I tried eating there after participating in the Polar Bear activities. We left after being told there was close to an hour wait.

Applebee's  is almost definitely going to close, unless they make the same money as other nearby  Applebees year round.

IHOP also is endangered, if they are not doing good year round business.

DinEquities  revenue is down almost $700 million, that's no joke.

They have only 2 choices; shut down the weakest links, or sell out to Darden or Golden Gate Capital, which  I think is going to end up happening regardless.
