Regional: BREAKING Seaside Park NJ boardwalk on Fire!
Sep 12th, 2013 at 4:42pm

BREAKING NEWS: 5-alarm fire burning boardwalk on South end of Seaside Heights/Park NJ.  The Freeman's (Chance) carousel is here that survived Superstorm Sandy last year is in this area , and the adjoining arcade and Funtown Pier was already destroyed by Sandy.  Freeman's was the last location of the Chafatino carousel by Illions that came here from Coney Island in 1955.  The blaze started around 2:30pm in the vicinity of the  Kohrs Bros. frozen custard stand though more likely beneath it.  Late report says the carousel has been destroyed.

The historic Floyd Moreland carousel is at Casino Pier towards the North end of the boardwalk is probably safe though waiting for more updates.

UPDATE 8PM: Casino Pier reporting via Facebook that they are safe for now.

Funtown is gone.

Funtown where the rides were was already gone because of Sandy.  The fire destroyed what was left...the Freemans carousel, food stands, carny games, t-shirt shops and bars.

I been following it on Twitter.  A real shame.  I hope they take a lesson from Tilyou and come back even stronger and better.

As long as they don't charge admission to view the ruins like he did.

At the same time, it's important that the amusements on the South end of the Seaside boardwalk be rebuilt.  A few years back there were rumors that Funtown would be closed and condos built in their place.   That didn't happen at the time but decades earlier, the fire that destroyed the Long Branch amusement pier a few miles up the NJ shore was used as an excuse to rezone that beachfront so luxury residences could replace the former attraction.

The latest word I heard was that the fire blazed four blocks further up the boardwalk past Freemans/Funtown but was stopped there, though to do that the firefighters had to rip out two parts of the newly-rebuilt boardwalk to implement a fire break line.    Everything North of that break line has sustained soot and smoke damage.  The Casino Pier sections that survived Sandy (including the Moreland carousel) are safe for now.

Morning report-
All 32 businesses in Seaside park were destroyed, and an additional 20 in Seaside Heights. Close to half a mile of boardwalk.

Some of them didn't, including the owner of a French fries stand who said so on the evening news a little while ago.

Burned ruins of Freeman's Arcade, carousel centerpole clearly visible.  Rides around the drop tower in the background had already been destroyed by Sandy last year.

So sad. We were there twice shortly before Hurricane Sandy, and it had been beautiful.  We did not get out there this year.  I am just grateful I enjoyed the original while it was still standing.  This is just so sad, these poor folks JUST got themselves back together after Sandy, now this? I can't think of anything worse or more demoralizing for them.

Many did not have insurance, which is absolutely insane if this is you're sole income, but whatever, hope they can come back again after such a short time.  Really no period to recoup.  Not like this happened a few years after Sandy, but within the same calendar year.  It could not be worse, except if it happened on Memorial Day Weekend instead of after Labor Day.  But still, just terrible.

Did this affect the Casino Pier at all? I am not clear on that. That's the area I was in.

There sure were a lot of Kohr's Custard stands all over the boardwalk.  They had them in Asbury Park too when I used to go there as a child of the 1970s.  Fun times.

I just rode the Freeman's carousel a month ago.

No thankfully the Casino Pier including the Floyd Moreland carousel is safe, despite two-thirds of the pier stretching out over the beach, including their metal rollercoaster so famously pictured on the news nationwide sitting in the Atlantic, had already been destroyed by Sandy last year.

The fire raged about four blocks north-ward from Freemans/Funtown into the Heights but was stopped where the firefighters ripped out two sections of the newly-laid boardwalk to form a break line.

A worker who fled the frozen custard stand said on the TV news that the fire did not start right there where they were busy closing down for the season, but the smoke started emanating from beneath the boardwalk.

You know it was only relatively recently I learned that Kohr's Frozen Custard actually got started in Coney Island, yet today they are mostly identified as a fixture on the New Jersey shore and have no locations in Coney where they began.  Why can't we do something to encourage Kohr's to return the CI boardwalk?

One more thing...the fiberglass Chance carousel at Freeman's that burned down replaced an Illions carousel in the late 1980's that was originally Chafatino's Carousel on Surf Ave. in Coney, then Weber's Carousel on the boardwalk.  It was brought to Seaside Heights in 1956 to replace the original Freeman's carousel after that Dentzel ride burned down during the fire of 1955.  So history unfortunately is repeating itself here.

Note on Weber's carousel from Coney Island History Project

My pictures  of the former Chafatino/Weber's carousel at Freeman's in Seaside Heights from the mid-1970's
